President William Ruto and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua visit the ACK Diocese of Nyahururu in Laikipia on June 23, 2024.

President William Ruto pledged on Sunday to initiate a direct dialogue with Kenya’s youth regarding their frustrations with the country’s current state. Speaking at a church service in Nyahururu, President Ruto praised the youth demonstrations against the Finance Bill 2024, describing them as a commendable effort to address crucial national issues.

“We commend your initiative to voice your concerns over national matters. It is your democratic duty to stand up and be heard. We will engage in discussions to understand your concerns and collaborate for the betterment of our nation,” President Ruto affirmed.

Expressing pride in the youth for their peaceful demonstration devoid of tribal affiliations, President Ruto emphasized his government’s commitment to addressing their grievances amicably.

Meanwhile, Anglican Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit urged President Ruto to instruct law enforcement officials to exercise restraint during the protests. “Let us prioritize listening over speaking during this critical period. These protesters are our children; let’s refrain from excessive force. At the same time, we urge them to express their concerns peacefully and avoid violence,” Archbishop Sapit stated.

Tragically, the protests have not been without casualties. Two individuals lost their lives as a result of injuries sustained during last week’s demonstrations. One victim, Evans Kiratu, was critically injured and later succumbed to his injuries at Kenyatta National Hospital. Another, Rex Masai, allegedly fell victim to a gunshot in Nairobi’s CBD.

In response to these events, a seven-day protest is scheduled to commence on Monday, June 24, aimed at increasing pressure on the government to fully reject the Finance Bill.

The unfolding events highlight a growing national dialogue spurred by the youth’s activism, prompting a reconsideration of governmental policies and their impact on Kenyan society.
